Antivirals

So some guys called BBH made a video for Johnnie Walker called “The Man Who Walked Around The World” with Robert Carlyle in. It was 6 minutes long, one continuous take, and rather good. Lots of other people thought so and embedded the video from Youtube, just some examples:

But notice when you go to those sites now, the video isn’t there anymore. And why isn’t it?

This video is no longer available due to a copyright clame by Bartle Bogle Hegarty Limited.

That’s right, the ad agency that made the video. Funny old world, innit? This post breaks my rules about not writing about marketing or saying “fail” about things, but I couldn’t help myself because it’s just so remarkably dumb. Unless, that is, it’s some fiendish plan to get people to write about the advert even more, in which case my hat is off to the devious bastard responsible.

[for now someone has reuploaded the ad here]

Update: Romy Miller from BBH says:

The Man Who Walked Around The World was created exclusively as a storytelling film for the Johnnie Walker website and for internal use with selected audiences.  The film was made in 2008 and has been used for the aforementioned purpose since March 2009.

We were obliged to assert copyright authority over the film once it appeared to have been posted on youtube as there are no usage agreements beyond the film’s original use.

I’m not sure how you end up drawing up a rights contract to show the video on the Johnnie Walker website but not on YouTube, or in who’s interest such a deal is meant to be (Carlyle’s?) but there you go, I guess…
